Events such as fundraising breakfasts, public skating and horse-drawn sled rides dominated the weekend at sites in Blyth, Belgrave and Wingham, while Brussels was also home to free skating and a Brussels Lions Club breakfast.

Three local organizations, the Blyth and Brussels Lions Clubs and Brussels Optimists, together donated $2,500 to help young players get involved in hockey through the Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association (BBMHA).

Late last month, a dozen of the Huron Hurricanes travelled to the big city of Toronto to attend the Toronto Swim Club University of Toronto Winter Invitational Swim meet. Local athletes brought home with them many successes and memories.

On Jan. 11 the Central Huron Secondary School (C.H.S.S.) boys hockey team took on their hometown adversaries from St. Anne s Catholic Secondary School at the Central Huron Community Complex. St. Anne s walked away with a convincing 8-0 win.

Team Julie, a cycling team assembled by Blyth s Julie Sawchuk and her family, made a great impact on Sunday at Greg s Ride in Milton a cycling journey that raised money to make cycling safer.

This year s run in Brussels raised just over $4,000, with 60 runners and 10 volunteers taking part. Over the years, the Brussels run has raised a total of $135,000 for cancer research.
