Walton TransCan returns this month - Aug. 2, 2018
Few events are more synonymous with tourism in Huron County than the Walton TransCan Grand National Championship motocross event at the Walton Raceway.
After taking 2017 off for a variety of reasons, one of Huron County’s marquee events is back for Aug. 14-18.
The event has been running for over 25 years, bringing riders from all over North America to the small hamlet of Walton for days of world-class motocross.
In recent years, however, the raceway has expanded significantly to include a challenge course, mud bogs and radio-controlled car championships. Now, motocross is only 20 per cent of what the raceway does.
However, motocross is still what the raceway does best and the TransCan is the crown jewel of the Walton Raceway and its biggest event.
The amateur championships run Aug. 14-17, while the Pro National Championship will take to the course on Saturday, Aug. 18.
In recent years, the event has expanded to include many different events for those with a variety of interests, including a concert that has been played by the likes of country music sensation Brett Kissel and others.
The owners of the raceway have also taken big steps to improve the spectator experience as well, improving walkability and thoroughfares around the grounds, as well as including spectator seating and improving sightlines.
The event begins on Monday, Aug. 13 with sign-in for amateur riders and the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. that night.
On Tuesday morning, riders will be on the course beginning at 7:15 a.m. for practise, followed by dozens of races throughout the day.
The action continues on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with races running from 7 a.m. to nearly 6 p.m. every day.
Friday will conclude at the raceway with the presentation of the year’s Amateur Award.
On Saturday, the professionals will take to the raceway, beginning with several practices between 8-9:30 a.m. Races continue through the morning until everyone breaks for the opening ceremonies of the Walton TransCan Grand National Championship at 12:30 p.m.
The MX1 and MX2 riders will then be on the track throughout the afternoon, with races running until 3:35 p.m., when the final race of the day is set to start.
