Numerous local women honoured by government - June 22, 2017
BY JO-ANN MCDONALD
An amazing event was hosted by MPP Lisa Thompson of Huron Bruce and Mayor Maureen Cole of South Huron last Thursday evening. They hosted the event to celebrate the many remarkable women of Huron County. This year marks the 150th birthday of Canada, the 150th anniversary of Ontario joining confederation and the 100th anniversary of women earning the vote in Ontario.
The evening began with a social time and then words of welcome from both hosts. Dinner followed and then the presentation of the Remarkable Women of Huron County certificates began. There were 196 women nominated to receive the award (with 120 being in attendance), for their service as elected officials, community advocates, entrepreneurs, athletes, writers, community volunteers, entertainers and so much more. The common thread is that they lead by example and are proud to call Huron home.
During a break in the presentations, special guest, Elizabeth Witmer, former MPP Minister and now, Chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, gave her address to the those assembled. Presentations continued following her address.
At the conclusion of the evening, the Walton/Brussels, Seaforth, area recipients gathered for a photo. Included in the area photo were Kathy Nichol, Nancy Michie, Dorothy Kelly, Sarah Mitchell, Heather Bone, Mary Douma, Cathy Goetz, Judy Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald, Debbie Seili, Amy Cronin, Brenda Dalton, Dianne Diehl, Betty Glanville, Nicole Whyte, Marion Studhalter and Jacquie Bishop. There were others from our area that were unable to attend but we congratulate all the recipients!
