Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador Erin McMahon has just returned from the annual ambassador excursion to Toronto and says it was an amazing experience.
“The [Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS)] convention at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel is an unbelievable experience to be a part of,” McMahon said in a message to The Citizen. “I am very lucky to have been able to take part in it and learn more about what it means to be a positive representation of not only your community, but your Agricultural Society.”
The convention was held on Feb. 15-17 at the Royal York in Toronto and it featured a number of seminars and experiences for the ambassadors.
McMahon said her experience began with registration and the traditional “pin swap” where ambassadors share pins from their agricultural society.
The first day wrapped up with a visit to the convention’s entertainment showcase and then a visit to the hospitality suite, where McMahon says that she and her fellow ambassadors had a chance to get to know one another better.
Friday of the convention began with a number of seminars. McMahon said it was thrilling to hear from former provincial ambassadors.
“Listening to past [Canadian National Exhibition (CNE)] Ambassadors, past fair ambassadors and the present CNE Ambassador gave me an insight into what to expect at the CNE this August,” McMahon said. “The knowledge retained as a result of these seminars will help me on my journey to prepare for the CNE and how to represent my community to the best of my ability in these last few months as the Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador.”
On Friday, McMahon attended three seminars and then went to the Friday night showcase, for which she said she was extremely nervous. However, once she got on stage, she said she was calm and performed well.
McMahon, however, said that her big takeaway from the convention was the knowledge she took away from the seminars and the friendships she made along the way.
“Not only am I grateful for the knowledge, I am thankful to have met so many wonderful ladies and gentlemen who are fellow fair ambassadors,” she said. “Hearing about everyone’s unique experiences was exciting and it allowed me to connect with them. I always hear about how previous ambassadors made lifelong friendships at this convention and I am hoping to be lucky enough to do the same.”
