Madill athletes excel at Cambridge's Track Wars - May 10, 2018
After a long, cold winter, F.E. Madill Secondary School’s track and field team finally began its competitive season last week.
Nearly 2,000 athletes attended Track Wars at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge, providing a large field of competition for Madill’s 31 athletes, who produced some promising results which bode well for the season.
The team accumulated 12 personal best performances by the end of the day while breaking four meet records, four school records and one benchmark.
Leading the way in the throw events, Junior Boy Ryan Jacklin, continued to improve on past performances and delight the spectators with his distances and technique. He won all three events he entered: the shot put with a put of 18.33 metres, the discus with a throw of 58.54 metres and the javelin with a throw of 53.11 metres. His winning throws set new meet and school records.
Teammate Hannah VanStuvenberg also set a new personal best and meet record with her first-place 34.62-metre throw in Junior Girls discus. She also won second in javelin (25.14 metres) and third in shot put (10.48 metres).
On the track, Junior Girl Brooke Jez ran a tactical 1,500-metre race and outran the field with her strong finishing kick to the finish line, posting a winning time of 5:08.57. The time breaks the former school record (5:11.09) set by Madeline Yungblut in 2010.
The team is gearing up for the next meet, the Huron Perth Invitational, held at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School next week.
