Hurricanes set personal bests at meet - Feb. 2, 2017
BY SANDY FOREMAN
Late last month, a dozen of the Huron Hurricanes travelled to the big city of Toronto to attend the Toronto Swim Club University of Toronto Winter Invitational Swim meet. Local athletes brought home with them many successes and memories.
At the meet the club achieved a record-breaking number of new personal-best times.
Members were hopeful when they registered to attend this swim meet that they would have a memorable weekend. At that time, little did they know that swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak would be awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy, the most prestigious award for a Canadian Athlete of any sport and that this award presentation would take place during this swim meet.
Many Hurricanes were a little star struck on Saturday afternoon when they had the opportunity to watch the trophy presentation from the very best location… on the pool deck.
The Hurricanes, got autographs and had photos taken with Penny. Senior girls Kayla Gauthier, Sarma Martinsons and Natalie VanNiejenhuis competed with the Varsity swimmers from many universities, including former Hurricanes Kennedy Fitzgerald and Natasha Dobos both on the University of Waterloo team and Lesley Ridsdale on the Brock University team.
Most memorable might be swimming in the same pool and same event as world silver medallist and bronze Olympic medallist Kylie Masse. Kylie was the winner of the 50-metre Freestyle event.
Volunteer Coach Sandy Foreman did a great job attending with the swimmers.
The Hurricane’s next swim meet is hosted by the Region of Waterloo Swim Club at the Wilfrid Laurier University Athletic Complex on Feb. 4-5 and then they will be off to Port Elgin on Feb. 9.
Huron Hurricanes Aquatic Club is a competitive and recreational youth swim club in Huron County.
The Hurricanes swim in both Vanastra Recreation Centre and the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre and have swimmers from as far as Mitchell, Wingham and Grand Bend, some as young as six. Some swimmers love to race and dream big, while others just love to be fit!
