Brussels veterans honoured with light post banners - Oct. 11, 2018

The Brussels Legion is giving community members an opportunity to honour a loved one who has served in a past conflict through its new banner project.
Similar to the banners that have been hung in communities like Clinton and other parts of Central Huron, the Legion is partnering with a company from Hanover to create the banners. They stand over five feet tall and can include a picture of a veteran, his/her name and some information about his/her service.
Legion President Jamie Mitchell said he was approached by a representative of the company and the Branch Executive decided to roll out the program. Mitchell and fellow Legion members Sandra Josling and Deb Ross all decided to lead the way, getting their own banners, which were printed at the end of last week.
Mitchell says that the current intake has since passed, but the Legion is now collecting information from residents who would like to have a loved one honoured on a banner. The cost, paid to the Legion, will be $300, with the Legion absorbing the tax from each banner.
He says he had seen them in neighbouring municipalities and thought they would be a good fit for Brussels, so when he was approached, he brought it to the executive and it was approved right away.
Mitchell’s banner honours his great uncle who served in the army in World War II.
The Legion envisions that the banners will be out on light posts in front of the Legion (and hopefully further down the main street) from early fall until after Remembrance Day. They will eventually give way to Christmas decorations, but then they’ll be brought indoors and hung around the Legion, so that they’re displayed year-round.
Mitchell says that it’s great to honour veterans on Remembrance Day, but members of the community should be really thinking of these men and women the other 364 days of the year as well and this project should help with that.
