The Brussels Tigers conquered the Huron County Fastball Championship last month to be named top team in the league.
The tournament was hosted by Monkton Muskrats at the Kinsmen baseball diamonds in Listowel Sept. 15-16.
The team played with a shortened bench, but everyone pulled up their socks and played with pure determination according to team representative Shawn Daw.
Because the team entered the post-season in first place they received a significant advantage in the tournament by being the home team for each of its games.
The squad faced the Fullarton A’s twice on Sunday, once in the final match of the tournament and once in the semi-finals.
The final match saw the Tigers earn a triumphant 3-1 win over Fullarton with Dennis Dewar on the mound.
Earlier that day, the Tigers bested the A’s by a score of 11-2 in five innings, again with Dewar on the mound.
Saturday, the Tigers faced off against the Sebringville Jr. Sting and earned 7-6 win with Dewar pitching. Earlier in the day, the squad started the tournament with a 10-3 win in five innings with Dewar and Daw pitching.
Daw said the team finished the season with an impressive record of 19-5
“The season was a full-team effort and the post-season was as well,” he said.
Both he and Dewar were called to the mound after Ty Sebastian missed the championships due to playing for Team Canada after playing with the team for most of the season.
As for the win, he said everything was working the way it was supposed to.
“We had great defence and great sticks and that’s how we won,” he said. “Everyone was playing loose and having fun. The roster was more interested in having a good time and, when that happens, people play better.”
He said the team picked up some new players throughout the year, but is always looking for more people to join up and have some fun. Anyone interested in joining can contact Daw at 519-523-0056 or any other member of the team.
The Tigers would like to thank everyone who came out and supported them all year and Daw said that, thanks to those contributions, the squad was able to buy jerseys to outfit the entirety of Brussels Minor Baseball.
The Tigers had recently bought jerseys for some teams. Now, thanks to the team’s annual tournament and community involvement, those teams that didn’t get new jerseys will be taking the field next year in new threads.
“We want to thank the community for their contributions throughout the years,” he said. “It makes everything we do possible.”
