The Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association is benefitting from the generosity of several community groups, local businesses and the community at large with a recent bottle drive organized for the association.
Sarah Cherrey, who, alongside her husband Derek and other volunteers planned the drive, said she was very pleased with the event.
Two drop-off points were located on Saturday at Scrimgeour’s Food Market in Blyth and The Jam Jar Pub and Eatery in Brussels.
Sarah said more than $500 was raised at the Scrimgeour’s drop-off and the Jam Jar total has yet to be determined, but she estimates it at $1,000.
“Derek was there and he said he was slammed from 11 a.m. until we closed it,” she said.
With approximately $1,500 already accounted for, Cherrey said that donation boxes, located at supporting business like the Queens Bakery, have yet to be collected and two community service groups are also contributing.
The Brussels Optimists Club and Blyth Lions have both promised donations from events, including the upcoming Blyth Lions Christmas party on Dec. 9.
“We estimate that we’ll raise about $2,000 by the time we get all that in,” she said.
