Blyth Midget Girls Bullets claim provincial broomball silver - Feb. 14, 2019

The Blyth Midget Girls Bullets broomball team captured a provincial silver medal over the weekend after a hard-fought, long tournament in Barrie.
The squad initially posted a 1-0 win over tournament champions Kilsyth in overtime, but, due to a double knockout rule, had to face off against them a second time, losing the championship game 1-0, again in overtime.
“We beat Kilsyth once, but because it’s a true double knockout, we had to beat them twice to get the gold,” team coach Ken Logtenberg said. “We couldn’t do it. I guess we just ran out of gas.”
Logtenberg said that was the theme for the tournament as Blyth had to go to overtime four times to find a winner.
To get to the championships, the squad posted 1-0 wins over Mildmay and their sister Blyth squad, the Blyth Ice. The team was downed by the Stealth team, based in Ottawa, 2-0.
Logtenberg said the squad has had a successful season, earning medals in tournaments in Blyth and Windsor, and competing in a tournament in Mildmay last month. He attributed his players’ victories to good, fundamental play.
“Part of the reason we’re successful is strong defence,” he said. “We don’t give up many goals. We also have a strong passing game and play well as a team.”
